My name is Rosalie and I am the Garden Coordinator at Adelante. The students call me Miss/Maestra Rose or sometimes "Garden Lady." My job is to work with teachers and students to enhance the science curriculum already taught here. We take science to the next level by going outside, doing hands on garden work, conducting experiments, playing educational games, and even singing songs! I also help to maintain the gardens at Adelante and run the after school garden club for students.
I was born in Ohio on an organic farm. Growing up I was encouraged to help with garden work, as well as explore the wilderness around our country home. Due to this unique experience, I believe that all children should be given the opportunity to explore the world in which they live. I love sharing nature and gardening with the students!
I studied life sciences, environmental education, and environmental travel in collage and was lucky enough to visit Belize, Costa Rica, Mexico, and the Bahamas, where I learned about sustainable living and farming techniques. I also studies the local birds, fish, plants and wildlife of these tropical regions. I lived on a sail boat for a week, and became an Advanced Open Water SCUBA diver, going 100 feet under the ocean!
After graduating I moved to California where I worked for San Mateo Outdoor Education as a naturalist. I also worked for 2 years at Sempervirens Outdoor school, leading 5th and 6th grade students on educational hikes in the Redwood forest! I spent last summer in Mount Shasta at a wilderness awareness and survival school. I slept in a bark tee-pee every night, learned to make natural crafts, survival shelters, and fire by friction!
I love to learn and try new things. Some of my favorite pastimes include, studying plants and herbs, doing yoga, playing my guitar, hiking, camping and cooking healthy food. I also love to travel and have lived in Ohio, South Dakota, California, Oregon and Hawaii.
If you see me around the school come and say hello! I would love to answer any questions you have about the garden program or do some gardening together.
